Here is a video report on Florida Gov. Charlie Crist today dodging a question about running as an Independent in this fall's Florida U.S. Senate race. Until today, Crist has always said flatly that he is a Republican and would not run as an Independent if he loses to Marco Rubio in the GOP primary.
But with his campaign floundering, Crist has apparently decided he is not such a dedicated Republican. Rumors are strong that he will run as an Independent, which would make a three-way race between Crist, Rubio and Democrat Kendra Meek.
If Crist does this, he will really deal a harsh blow to his own character. He will be putting his own political future above the good of his party and his country. He has to know that by running, he makes it more possible for Democrats to win Florida, a win that could make the difference in them keeping control of the U.S. Senate. For him to even consider making that more likely by running, shows just how little support he deserves from Republicans.
