Lone Gunman Opens Fire on Pentagon Security Officers; Officers Wounded, Gunman Killed - Video 3/4/10
Here is video of the Chief of the Pentagon Police describing the attack by a lone gunman last night against Pentagon Security Officers at an entrance near the Pentagon and the Pentagon "Metro Station." The gunman - John Patrick Bedell - pulled out two 9 millimeter semiautomatic handguns and opened fire on the officers. Two officers were wounded, but were able to return fire, hitting the gunman in the head. He later died from his wounds.
Police believe he acted alone, and are trying to determine a motive for the attack.
Police told ABC News that the two police officers wounded in the shooting have been released from hospital after suffering minor injuries. They are now on administrative leave pending the investigation of the incident, police said.
The suspect opened fire at 6:40 p.m. after officers asked him for an access pass, police said.
The gunman has been identified as John Patrick Bedell, 36, sources told ABC News and The Associated Press. Pentagon Police Chief Richard S. Keevill said that he appeared to have acted alone. He was carrying two 9 mm semi-automatic guns and many magazines of ammunition, according to police.
Keevill said there was no indication yet as to the suspect's motive, saying he appeared to be a "single individual that had issues." He added that there was "no indication at this point [of] any domestic or international terrorism at all." . . . MORE
