Sen. John McCain Hammers Obama Handling of National Security through Tense Exchange with Robert Gates - Video 2/2/2010

Here is video of Sen. John McCain today as he grilled Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in a tense exchange about his opinion on where the Christmas Bomber should be tried - in civilian court or in a military tribunal? Gates refused to answer, saying he would defer to Attorney General Eric Holder.

McCain said Holder had obviously botched this "very, very badly," and urged Gates to come forth with a view on this important matter. He also asked Gates if it was sufficient to question Abdulmutallab only 50 minutes, but again, he would not answer.

McCain was obviously sending a message to Obama about the utter failure of their approach on National Security and Terrorist interrogations. Really, Gates could do nothing other than what he did today, and McCain knew that. But this was a huge shot across the bow to Obama on his handling of these matters.

Facts, however, are funny things. The latest FBI revelations tell us that the Christmas bomber is _disclosing_ a great deal of important, sensitive information to U.S. authorities. This would not have happened under torture, rendition, or enemy combatant status. The law enforcement approach, combined with shared international intelligence, works better than the "perpetual war" model. Everyone knows this except about 22% of the American public, which seems to include the authors of this blog.
