Effort Underway Among Senate Democrats to Pass Public Option Using Reconciliation Process - Video 2/19/10
UPDATE: Adding Rachel Maddow exulting at the possibility Democrats might try to ressurrect the Public Option and ram ObamaCare through:
Here is video of MSNBC's Keith Olbermann talking to Ezra Klein of the Washington Post and Newsweek, about an effort underway among Senate Democrats to put the "Public Option" back in a Health Care Bill and pass it using the "Nuclear Option" Reconciliation Process.
Indications are that about 20 Senate Democrats have signed a letter urging Majority leader Harry Reid to use the "Reconciliation Process" to pass a Public Option Bill, which would require a final vote of only 51 to pass. Klein told Olbermann that as he called Senate offices today, staffers told him that even though some signed the letter, they are "terrified" of doing this because of the possible backlash against Democrats.
Klein said the White House has agreed to push for the Public Option if Senate Leaders round up the votes, but the Senate Leadership says they will use reconciliation if the White House rounds up the votes! Neither wants to "take the hit" for doing it, Klein says. Klein just flat out said that there is now a "failure of leadership" on the part of the White House in not "calling the play."
It would seem this shows that Democrats are "terrified" of going into November's election with nothing to show for all the time and energy consumed with trying to pass Government Health Care. They know their Left-wing base will be very disillusioned with them if they don't pass something. They want the Public Option to get their base re-energized to help them mitigate the massive losses they could be facing in the midterm.
But once again, Democrats are miscalculating if they think it will help them to ram through a "Public Option" Government Takeover of Health Care using what they used to describe as the "Nuclear Option." Americans are enraged at what they have already tried to do. If they do what is being described here, the fury will only grow and the determination to vote them out will be cemented.
