Here are video reports on a manhunt overnight for a man who killed eight people and then later shot at a police helicopter in Central Virginia. The man - Christopher Speight - has reportedly just surrendered this morning (see article below). A decision was made to close the public schools in the area because of the manhunt.
A man suspected in the shooting deaths of eight people in central Virginia has turned himself in, authorities said Wednesday morning.
Authorities closed schools in rural central Virginia on Wednesday as police intensified their search for Christopher Speight, 39.
"The schools are being closed as a safety precaution," said Appomattox County Sheriff O. Wilson Staples.
Authorities think Speight acted alone in the shootings, according to Virginia State Police spokesman Tom Molinar.
Seven of the victims were killed in and around a home in Appomattox, about 75 miles southwest of Richmond, and the eighth was found in the middle of a road, Molinar said. Males and females were killed, but authorities did not provide their ages.
Speight was acquainted with his victims, but the nature of the relationships was not clear, said Corinne Geller of the State Police. A motive in the shootings is being investigated.
"Our focus is still on finding him and apprehending him," Geller said, after an overnight manhunt involving more than 100 officers. . . . MORE
