Today is the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down, signaling - in effect - the crumbling of the Soviet Empire and the end of the Cold War. It happened on November 9, 1989.
The video above is of President Ronald Reagan, on June 12, 1987, making his famous "Tear Down this Wall" Speech at the Brandenburg Gate. Just 2 1/2 years later, it happened!
Reagan's policy of strong defense through the 1980's finally brought about the crumbling of the Iron Curtain. Democrats opposed Reagan at every turn in his attempts to build up America's Nuclear Arsenal and develop the "Star Wars" Missile Defense Shield. In fact, they scoffed at him and ridiculed him. But his buildup was the final push that bankrupted the Soviet Union financially and their already bankrupt Communist ideology. Gorbachev could not hold it together and keep up with the United States militarily.
Reagan called the Soviet Union the "Evil Empire." It was not politically correct to do so. But truth was on his side, and he was on the side of freedom. May we have leaders now - and in the future - who will choose to be on the side of truth and freedom.
