Here is video of pollster and political analyst Charlie Cook telling MSNBC's Chris Matthews that things are not looking good for Democrats. He pointed to new polling that shows on "Party Identification," Democrats now have only a 5-point advantage over Republicans, 45%-40%. That's down from a 17-point margin in January, 52%-35%. Cook said Party ID is always a "lagging indicator," meaning things have really gone sour for Obama.
He also warned that Democrats face a real problem in next year's mid-term election because mid-terms are almost always dominated by older voters, whom Cook said Obama is weakest with.
Matthews and Cook also talked with the Washington Post's Anne Kornblut about the Obama "School Speech," which Matthews admitted was a fiasco because of the urging by Obama's people that children write about how they could "support President Obama."
They close with Obama's Speech on Health Care next Wednesday to a Joint Session of Congress. Matthews said this speech is the key moment of Obama's first term. If he cannot "unite his party" and pass something, Matthews said Republicans will run against him as having tried to get "death panels" and destroy Health Care.
Cook said several "swing Democrats" are planning not to attend the speech because they don't want to be seen in the chamber during the speech.
NOTE: This is the most rational I think I've ever seen Chris Matthews be.
