Ronald Reagan Warns Against "Socialized Medicine" as the Pathway to a Socialized America - Audio 1961

Here is audio of Ronald Reagan in virtual prophetic voice speaking against "Socialized Medicine," 48 years ago. He was speaking in 1961 and pointed out that Socialism would always be rejected directly by the American people, but that attempts to introduce it into the American bloodstream could come through socialized medicine.

Reagan was speaking before the adoption of Medicare, and was warning against the "encroachment" of socialism through medical care. He explains that Social Security was always intended to be a safety net, not the primary livelihood of citizens replacing personal savings and incomes.

Of course, Medicare was adopted during the Lyndon Johnson administration and is not solvent today. Yet the Democrats hold it up as the model for why we should now continue the encroachment of Socialism by extending Socialized Medicine to a new level, which will being us closer to the day when Government has its hands in every aspect of our lives.

Reagan closes with an impassioned plea for citizens to write the members of Congress. He said:

"If you don't, this program I promise you will pass just as surely as the sun will come up tomorrow, and behind it will come other Federal Programs that will invade every area of freedom as we have known it in this country, until, one day as Norman Thomas said, we will awake to find we have Socialism. If you don't do this, and if I don't do it, one of these day, you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children, and our children's children what it was like in America when men were free."

Can you believe that. Medicare passed and has helped many, but it is bankrupt and it increased the "encroachment," as Reagan called it, of Socialism in America. Behind it has come one Federal Program after another until we now stand face to face with ObamaCare, which would take the encroachment of Socialism to a stratospheric level. Here is where it must be turned back.

Listen to Reagan's words 48 years ago. They sound like he is speaking to the ObamaCare debate of today. He is.

Ronnie Reagan was a good President and a better actor. This recording was a paid acting gig for him, and suddenly, today, the rightwing blogosphere has turned to this cheesy recording as some sort of prophecy from a saint!

Who the hell put this on today's talking points memo?

Think about it: Reagan predicts how America will be destroyed by "socialized medicine" a.k.a. Medicare. Almost 50 years ago.

Medicare was passed and, by golly, America still survived.

So Ronnie got paid to make a Chicken Little speech that ultimately proved to be a ridiculously paranoid monologue -- and now, suddenly, it gets touted as being "way ahead of his time".

It was horribly in error in 1961, and it should be viewed as a joke in 2009.

Rightwingnuts never seem to learn.

What Reagan predicted was that passing Medicare would continue the "encroachment" toward Socialism. He said it would lead to one Federal Program after another that eat away at individual freedom UNTIL ONE DAY Americans would wake up to Socialism.

Democrats want to continue growing Government so that one day more Americans will be totally dependent on Government for everything than there are Americans who are self-reliant. For Democrats, it is a strategy to take and keep power.

Reagan was right, and what Obama is trying to do 48 years later is living proof of his wisdom. We are much closer to the "One Day" Reagan spoke of when we will wake up to Socialism.

You comments about the success of Medicare are incredible. Medicare - fraught with fraud - is part of the reason our country is getting closer and closer to bankruptcy. You call that "success"? Wow.

Oh, and what proof do you have that this was just a "gig" for one of the best Presidents - Reagan - we have ever had? Not saying there is not proof, but anyone who know anything about President Reagan would know this attitude toward socialism is completely within character for him.

Somehow, I do not believe you will be able to provide verifiable proof.

OK, Anon, you said:

"You comments about the success of Medicare are incredible. Medicare - fraught with fraud - is part of the reason our country is getting closer and closer to bankruptcy. You call that "success"?"

No, actually, I didn't call that "success". Actually, I never used the word "success" at all. All I said is that Medicare passed, despite Reagan's gloom-and-doom prediction to the contrary, and that "America still survived.

And Brian? Brian, Brian, Brian... there you go again. Instead of accepting Reagan's prediction of Socialism arising if Medicare passed, you're now willing to make it an open-ended prophecy, that "someday" we'll reach that "one day: when we'll wak up with SOcialism? The point is that, ever now and then, people trot out that lame Reagan performance in their best Chicken Little impression. And -- for fifty years, and counting -- the sky has not fallen. Sorry, Ronnie!

By the way, Anon, as to who said it was a paid gig, I believe if you research Operation Coffee Cup, you'll find what you asked about. Most recently, I read abou this in a (relatively) new book entitled "Nixonland" by Rick Perlstein.

When listening to Reagan, Americans instinctively knew that what he was saying was right and good....and his pride for being an American came through loud and clear. There was no doubt we had the right man for the job.
With Obama, Americans instinctively know that what he is saying (and doing) is wrong and evil....and his disgust for America is unmistakeable. There is no doubt we have the wrong man for the job, unless you're for the destruction of America, too.

stop the partisan foolishness

Obama is wrong and evil? Grow up. Please.

America as we know it, is dead. Ronald Reagan was correct. In the near future, we will repudiate every principle of our constitution. America has NOT survived. The united states maybe, but AMERICA, r.i.p.
Obummer is gonna drive the last nail in the coffin, and we will soon be a socialist country and we will have to tell our kids what it was like to live free.

Obummer is the worst thing that ever happened to this country. And he has not proved that he is even legally entitled to RUN for president, let alone be president.
When he demonstrates his full original BIRTH certificate, then that question may be answered.

Obama not legally entitled to run for president? Wow. I don't think I'll dignify that kind of paranoia with comment. But on Reagan's speech: come on! If one wishes to refute the adoption of a a public option or Obama care on its own terms, fine. This speech, however, was an argument against Medicare! That's what it is, and that must not be forgotten. And this speech was an embarrassment: medicare is now the second most beloved federal program ever adopted in the nation's history. Argue which ever way you like about the current health care crisis, but this speech is now propoganda in favor of Obama-care, not AGAINST it! How can one opposing a public option take Reagan's error in this matter and do the mental acrobatics required to actually view it as evidence in support of his or her viewpoint is beyond me. Frankly, having me listen to this to convince me why today's talk of socialism in Obama-care is right and valid leaves me feeling a little embarrassed for you.
