Gaffe: Obama Thinks Emperor Hirohito Signed Japanese Surrender; "Victory" Not Goal in Afghanistan - Video 7/23/09

Not a good week for President Obama. He's created the whole police "acted stupidly" fiasco. Now he has made another historical gaffe, this time by saying Japanese Emperor Hirohito signed the surrender of Japan to Gen Douglas MacArthur in 1945. Problem is: Hirohito didn't sign the surrender! On September 2, 1945, General Yoshijiro Umezu and Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu represented Japan in signing the Instrument of Surrender aboard the Battleship Missouri. Here's video of the surrender:

Obama used the incorrect historical reference to support his statement that "victory" is not necessarily our goal in Afghanistan:

"I'm always worried about using the word 'victory,' because, you know, it invokes this notion of Emperor Hirohito coming down and signing a surrender to MacArthur," Obama told ABC News.

This from the President who the media tells us is the smartest, most intellectual President we've ever had.

And what would hsve been wrong with Hirohito, who supported the Japanese war/aggression 110% "coming down???", to sign the surrender. Just because the Japanese revere him as some sort of deity, does that mean we have to do the same. After inflicting all the atrocities, etc., etc., upon the rest of the world, he deserves at the very least to be incarcerated, better yet, give him the same fate that he helped inflict upon hudreds of thousands of other innocent human beings.

Of course at least he didn't go an vomit on the Japanese Prime Minister like another US President did. (As long as we're talking accurate historical information).

You see, Axel, when you want to end the fighting (and we did) it's pretty smart not to unnecessarily rub the other guy's nose in it. Ending the war was our objective, and we achieved it with the signatures we got. If we had insisted that Hirohito sign the armistice, either he may have balked, or the Japanese people as a whole may have balked. For what? So that we could unnecessarily flex our muscles?

That's kind of getting back to what Obama was saying in this case. We can sometimes "win" without grinding our opponent into dust. Foreign affairs aren't scored by a computer like college football's BCS, where you get extra credit for demolishing a defeated opponent.

The point is that Hirohito DID NOT sign the surrender and President Obama seems to think he did. Sure, that's an historical mistake that is not the end of the world, but it serves to show that Obama is not as smart as many believe he is, and the media never called him on this factual mistake. Had Sarah Palin made the same mistake in an interview, it would have been used as proof that she is unfit to be President.

Axel is obviously too young to have a proper historical perspective on the events of World War II.

Funny thing there about this BS. It would appear that someone doesn’t know what the word Notion means, or are trying to intentionally mislead people about what our first African American president actually said.

1. Mental apprehension of whatever may be known or imagined . . .

uh, axel, you do realize that Hirohito died almost 20 years ago, right?

Axel did you know that Hirohito had no military Authority, and was unable to influnce the military in any way right?

The bottom line for you clowns on the left is that Obama is not the brightest bulb on the tree.....this is a report on a stupid remark he made; which is not uncommon for him. If he doesn't know that Hirohito did not sign the surrender documents then it shows what an empty suit he truly is.....he is a lightweight in every sense of the word. Addtitionally, he is not black. He is multi-racial for you ignorant racists. He and his wife are a disgrace to America and it has nothing to do with race....I felt the same about Clinton and his "wife".
