Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak spoke to the world following the opening of a ground offensive into Gaza by Israeli Defense Forces. He said that Israel had "weighed all options," and had now begun "phase two" of their operation to root out Hamas terrorists in Gaza. Barak said the operation would "widen and deepen" as necessary to achieve Israel's security.
There is no question but that Israel has every right to do what is necessary to end Hamas' ability to lob shells into Israel killing Israeli civilians. Imagine if terrorists were shelling American cities in New Mexico or Texas from our southern border? Would the U.S. have the right to enter Mexico to end such attacks? Of course we would! The fact Hamas embeds their operatives among the civilian population of Gaza means any civilian casualties are on their own heads, and not on Israel. I hope Israel will sustain this operation long enough to do real and lasting damage to Hamas and their ability to do harm to Israel.

Take the same logic and reverse it. Though this time, instead of 4 casualties, count 507 with thousands injured. Now Palestine is going to try to keep their people safe..they are bound to retaliate in some way..and then Israel will fire back. I don't see how such a harsh offensive by Israel is going to do anything except spurn more hatred and create more people who want to avenge the murders of their loved ones.
I understand where you are coming from, but it is not reasonable to think that bombing/massacring a people will get them to realize that they should strive to uphold peace. They are likelier to be even angrier than before. Israel just worsened its problem - just gave more Palestinians a reason to join Hamas, which is clearly not what anyone wants.
